Everything you need to know about the trending App Sarahah

Sarahah, which in Arabic means ‘Honesty’, is an online anonymous messaging app on iOS and Android, developed in Saudi Arabia by 29-year-old Zain Alabdin Tawfiq. It’s an application that lets users leave messages on other users’ profiles without one’s identity being revealed.

In the words of the app itself: “Sarahah helps you in discovering your strengths and areas for improvement by receiving honest feedback from your employees and your friends in a private manner.”

Remember just a few years ago there were Facebook Confessions Page mushrooming everywhere on Facebook? Sarahah is an extension of that concept, with a little more personal touch.

It’s available on both Google Play and App Store. Once you’ve created an account, you’ll receive a custom URL which will direct your friends to the page where they can send you messages. Anyone can open that link and leave you a message and you’ll never know who sent it unless the person chooses to write his/her name. It facilitates the exchange of messages that you wouldn’t want to tell someone to their face.

Not everyone agrees with the mission of the app, and some users say it will facilitate and encouraging bullying online. Critics on social media have said the anonymity granted by Sarahah gives users “an excuse to bully people” and that it will lead to abuse.  But the company recently added a tool that lets users block messages from senders who may have sent offensive messages.
