This is Google’s answer to Apple’s 3D Touch

If you were jealous by the 3D Touch show on latest Apple devices, then don’t worry. It looks like, Google has it covered in the 2nd preview of Android N.

For starters, Google surprised everyone with the earlier roll out of Android N dev preview in March and the 2nd preview just rolled out 2 days ago. Aside from some new emojis and updated folder design, the search giants has also added a similar feature to 3D Touch of iPhone.

Google says launcher shortcuts are meant to help users perform actions quicker and can contain an “Intent into specific points within your app.” It includes the possibilities like sending a message to your best friend, navigating home in a mapping app, or playing the next episode of a TV show in a media app.

Of course, one need a supported launcher and an app with added functionality to witness it. The guys at phandroid were able to pull it off with Nova launcher and a weather app as shown in this video. As you can see, with the swipe down gesture on the app icon, it gives different options to choose from.

Well, this new added functionality can open the floodgates of opportunities as how we interact with our device on daily basis. It will be up to developers to come up with innovative ideas to take the advantage of it.

So, what are your thoughts about it? Well, I can’t wait to see how Google’s version of 3D touch is gonna play out in the final version. Seems interesting, right?
