Ordered JioPhone? Here’s the Fine Print you should be aware of

At the launch of JioPhone, Mukesh Ambani, the managing director of Reliance Industries Limited, said the JioPhone would be effectively free to customers, as the ₹1,500 they are paying to Reliance Jio would be refundable after 3 years.

The deal offered the JioPhone user to use his phone for 36 months and be eligible to get a full refund of the security deposit by returning the used JioPhone. Jio has now published detailed terms and conditions of JioPhone Refund, we’ve summarized the fine print here:

  • If you plan to return the JioPhone at any time during the period of three years from the date of first issue, then you will have to pay an early return charges depending on the age of the JioPhone
Time of Return of JioPhone Early Return Charges
Upto 12 months from the date of first issue of the JioPhone Rs. 1,500/- (Rupees One Thousand Five Hundred only) plus applicable GST or other taxes
After 12 months and up to 24 months from the date of first issue of the JioPhone Rs. 1,000/- (Rupees One Thousand only) plus applicable GST or other taxes
After 24 months and up to 36 months from the date of first issue of the JioPhone Rs. 500/- (Rupees Five Hundred only) plus applicable GST or other taxes
  • “The JioPhone is available for continued use on the Recipient purchasing telecom recharge vouchers of an Authorised Carrier (presently Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited) from the Company or any of its authorised retailers for use in the Jio Phone of a minimum value of Rs. 1,500/- per annum for a period of 3 years from the date of the first issue of the JioPhone,” the terms of condition reads. This means that you will be spending at least ₹4,500 in a span of three years before you get the refund.
  • It also further states that Reliance Jio can repossess (or ask you to return) the JioPhone in case you fail to purchase recharge vouchers of at least ₹1,500 per year.

If we filter this down month wise, you need to spend at least ₹125 per month. It should also be noted that the nearest available plan costs ₹149 followed by ₹153.

More than six million JioPhone handsets have been pre-ordered, Reliance Jio said this month. JioPhone handsets have already started shipping and the next wave of booking is expected to open soon.
