LG G6 launched, and here’s everything you need to know!
Filling the tiny shoes of the LG G5
After an hour of delay, LG finally took the wraps off their flagship for 2017: the LG G6. This phone offers a lot of firsts, not only for LG, but also for the smartphone industry and LG says that many phones will follow suit this year. Also, they took a lot of jabs at Samsung.
Starting with the design, the G6 has a metal frame and a curved glass back for better ergonomics. They eliminated unnecessary elements from the design and gave a flush camera module on the back. They talked a lot about the feel in hand and how everyone wants a bigger screen but a smaller body. LG did this by giving us an 18:9 display instead of the conventional 16:9, giving us a phone that’s equally wide as a 5.2″ screen but fitting in a 5.7″ screen and giving an extra screen area of 11.6%. They call this a FullVision display, which also supports HDR10 and DolbyVision standards. The bezels and chins are at a minimum. They said that there will be more content coming up from Amazon and NetFlix for this new aspect ration, apps will also support this, and games like Temple Run 2: Lost Jungle are specially made for the LG G6. The video player will also have a “Zoom” feature to make standard widescreen content adaptive to 18:9. They said that more LG phones will be coming with this aspect ratio, and also other companies (Jab at Samsung #1)
The screen has rounded corners. The graphics and UX are all matched to have a similar rounded design language. Talking about the software, this phone has Google Assistant built in, and also works when the phone is sleeping. This makes it the first phone apart from the Pixel to have Google Assistant. The software is very well optimised to run with the SnapDragon 821 (no Snapdragon 835) to give additional features, great performance and additional battery life. The battery is rated at 3,300 mAh. They went to mention that they took many steps to ensure safety for batteries like a heat dispersion pipe, metal bumper around to save it from physical shocks and reasonable density. (Jab at Samsung #2) The phone is IP68 water resistant.
In terms of media, the LG G6 has a HiFi Quad DAC via a 3.5mm jack. The camera setup on the back is similar to the G5. There’s a primary shooter about which they didn’t mention anything, I think it will be similar to the G5’s primary shooter, which was exactly the same as the G4…. The secondary camera has improved optics, a 125 degree field of view and is at 13MP now. They did this for better transition between the 2 cameras. This becomes the World’s first phone with seamless optical zoom during 4K video capture. The front camera has a 100 degree field of view and smart clicking abilities. The camera app also has features like 360 degree panoramas, square photos and smart grid.
The phone will be available in 3 colors: Mystic White, AstroBlack, and Ice Platinum, and should be available in the coming weeks. We will update this article with the details once they become available.
