Qualcomm shows off fingerprint scanners under the display
In a race to the future for making technology seamless and minimalist in design, the fingerprint scanner has been the biggest hurdle. Samsung tried embedding it under the display on the S8 in partnership with Synaptics, but could not finish it on time. But this was an indication that we are moving towards hidden fingerprint scanners, thanks to a new announcement by Qualcomm at MWC Shanghai.
We are excited to announce Qualcomm Fingerprint Sensors because they can be designed to support sleeker, cutting-edge form factors, unique mobile authentication experiences, and enhanced security authentication. This provides OEMs and operators with the ability to offer truly distinct, differentiated devices with added value on truly groundbreaking new devices.
These new generation of fingerprint sensors use ultrasonic technology which are better at reading your fingerprints through grime. But Qualcomm took it to the next level by enabling them to scan through glass, metal and the display! It can also judge the direction of gestures, work underwater and also detect heartbeat pulse and blood flow, making it a complete biometric package. This gives manufacturers more flexibility with designs and form factors and use space better.
It is being demonstrated by Qualcomm and Vivo on modified Vivo Xplay 6 units on the show floor, and is supposed to get mainstream by the end of the year. Qualcomm Fingerprint Sensors for Glass and Metal are expected to be available to OEMs this month, and are expected in devices in the first half of 2018. Qualcomm Fingerprint Sensor for Display is expected to be available to OEMs in Q4 2017.
It’s a really interesting time for Tech as we move towards the next generation of design. It is rumoured that even Apple is trying something similar for its next iPhone as they are also trying to shrink their bezels, because the competition is doing so…
