Reliance JioPhone might support WhatsApp in near future

At the AGM of Reliance Industry last month, Mukesh Ambani led Reliance Jio launched their dream project called JioPhone. The JioPhone which runs a forked version of Firefox OS, already runs Jio services like Jio Music, Jio Cinema, Jio Money and others. It even comes with Facebook and YouTube pre-installed.

But the one big missing name at the launch event was WhatsApp. The IM app which is used by 200 Million Indian users is too big to ignore. A report in Factordaily stats that the two companies are already in talks for a WhatsApp support on JioPhone.

A special version of WhatsApp can give an important edge to JioPhone compared to rivals. Airtel and Vodafone, who are in talks with Intex to launch VoLTE enabled feature phones, may not get special treatment from the US company. Remember, Jio single handily convinced Qualcomm to develop a special CPU optimized for JioPhone.

How it turns out in the end is remains to be seen. Which features make way to JioPhone and will it come with any type of UPI integrations is still a mystery.
