Samsung shipped more than 5 million Gear VR headsets
At a CES event today, Samsung revealed some interesting numbers for its Gear VR headset. Samsung Electronics America President and COO Tim Baxter said that the company shipped more than 5 million Gear VR devices. As a result, total 10 million hours of video content has been viewed using Gear VR.
Samsung announced original Gear VR back in November 2014 with Galaxy Note 4 launch. The company partnered with Facebook-owned Oculus to provide VR content. The Gear VR does witness few interactions with more performance and comfortability. Unlike HTC Vive and Oculus Rift, which uses built-in display, the Gear VR utilize Samsung Galaxy display to experience the content.
Credit to Samsung, the company did push it with Galaxy S7/S7 Edge launch. Samsung gave it free with the pre-order of the Galaxy devices. That gave Gear VR much needed push and also encourages developers to utilize it.
By comparison, HTC sold 1,40,000 units of Vive during the first six months of sale. Oculus is also predicted to ship 3,55,000 units of Rift by the end of 2016.
