Best theatres to watch the Avengers: Endgame in Mumbai

Finally, “Destiny Has Arrived”. Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame is going to hit the big screens on April 26, 2018, and will be playing in a bunch of different formats in Mumbai. But, which format is the best way to watch the film?

For a movie of such grandiosity, you’d want to watch it in a theatre that is best suited for all the immersive visuals and sounds that the movie has to offer. We’ve broken down the formats in which the movie will be playing throughout Mumbai (and probably all over India for that matter) and which will offer the best experience. So let’s get started!

Avengers: Endgame is playing in seven different formats in Mumbai: Regular 2D, Regular 3D, IMAX 3D, 4DX, PVR P[XL], ONYX, and MX4D.

Following is a brief comparison between the various formats in which Avengers: Endgame is playing.

Now, let’s dive deeper into each format one by one.

Regular 2D and 3D

Nothing much interesting. All the theatres i.e. PVR, INOX, Carnival, Cinépolis, MAXUS, etc. come under the Regular category (cause I said it lol). These silver-screens houses a 2K or 4K projector and a Dolby 5.1 or 7.1 or ATMOS sound system.

Following are the multiplexes that offer 4K projection:

INOX Laserplex: CR2, Nariman Point (all screens; laser projection)
INOX: Inorbit Mall, Malad (W) (only 1 screen which is the ONYX LED screen)
INOX: R-City, Ghatkopar (only 1 screen which is the INOX LASER screen; laser projection)
PVR ICON: Infiniti, Andheri (W)
 (all screens)
PVR ICON: Oberoi Mall, Goregaon (E) (all screens, though only 1 screen is equipped with a laser projector i.e. PVR P[XL] screen)
PVR: Dynamix, Juhu (all screens)
PVR: Pheonix Market City, Kurla (only 1 screen is equipped with a laser projector i.e. PVR P[XL] screen)

4DX and MX4D

The reason why I am discussing 4DX and MX4D together is that both of them offer very similar experiences. 4DX and MX4D are not but a Regular theatre augmented with environmental effects such as seat motion, wind, rain, lights, bubbles, and scents. Check out these videos to get more idea about 4DX / MX4D. You can find 4DX at Cinépolis: Viviana Mall, Thane; PVR: Infiniti Mall, Malad; and PVR: Pheonix Market City, Kurla; and MX4D at INOX: Inorbit Mall, Malad.

I have watched Captain Marvel in 4DX. It was FUN! Click here to check out my first 4DX experience.

I haven’t watched anything in MX4D yet because it launched only recently. But the experience is going to be very similar to regular 4DX.

PVR P[XL] is PVR’s answer to IMAX. You will find PVR P[XL] at PVR ICON: Oberoi Mall, Goregaon (E) and PVR: Pheonix Market City, Kurla.

It has a huge IMAX-like curved screen (but in 2.35:1 aspect ratio) and Dolby ATMOS sound system. It uses Barco RGB Laser projector which has 4K resolution.

ONYX is a completely new technology by Samsung. There is NO projector in the auditorium. Instead, there is a 4K LED screen that has an aspect ratio of 1.85:1. You will find ONYX in INOX: Inorbit Mall, Malad (W). Also, rather than having a Dolby sound system, it has a JBL Sculpted Surround system. I have watched Jordan Peele’s US on this screen and I was blown away by the picture clarity and color reproduction. Other cinemas feel dull in front of the super-sharp and saturated ONYX screen.

If you are from Bangalore, you can enjoy watching Avengers on the recently unveiled, ‘World’s largest” Onyx Cinema LED Screen at Swagath Onyx (MG Road). Even Delhiites can enjoy Onyx screens at PVR, Vasant Kunj and DLF Cinepolis, Saket.

This is my personal favorite because of two reasons: its HUGE SCREEN and earth-shattering sound. There are five IMAX screens in Mumbai; INOX Inorbit, Cinépolis Viviana, INOX R-City, Carnival IMAX, and PVR Pheonix.

Each IMAX theatre houses a huge curved screen that stretches from wall-to-wall and ceiling-to-floor, has dual-2K projectors, 6-channel IMAX surround-sound system, and stadium-like seating.

The size of the screens ranges from 3 to 4 stories high. Following is the size of the IMAX screens at different locations in Mumbai:

Carnival IMAX Screen, Wadala: 21.2 × 11.8 meters
PVR ICON, Lower Parel: 18.1 × 9.4 meters
Cinépolis IMAX, Thane: 17.3 × 9.6 meters
INOX IMAX, Ghatkopar: 16.7 × 9.2 meters
INOX IMAX, Malad: not revealed yet (but surely, it is similar to the one found in INOX: R-City, Ghatkopar)

Recently, PVR has renovated its IMAX theatre. It installed a new screen, seats and possibly, replaced the old projector lamps with the new ones, resulting in a brighter and clearer picture.

IMAX screen vs conventional screen

Also, Avengers: Endgame is filmed completely with IMAX cameras, meaning you will get to see up to 26% more picture, only in IMAX theatres. Also, the IMAX 6-channel sound can literally shake your seat with its powerful bass that can go as low as 23 hertz, whereas Dolby ATMOS system goes till 40 hertz only.

Note: Reach the cinema hall before the showtime to not miss the IMAX countdown which happens at the beginning of every show.

I would highly recommend you to watch Avengers: Endgame in an IMAX theatre. Your second option should be either 4DX or MX4D, whichever is cheaper/nearer to your place. PVR P[XL] and INOX ONYX are great options as well/

From all the IMAX screens in Mumbai, I would recommend you to check out the IMAX screen which is at Wadala because of its massive size. But you can ever visit the IMAX screen which is nearest to you, as the experience in all IMAXs is gonna be similar.

Hope you have a spoiler-free experience of the final chapter of the Infinity Saga!
