How to move Steam games to another Hard Drive or SSD (without re-downloading)

Have you bought a new HDD or an SSD and want to transfer your Steam games into it? Or just want to transfer your Steam games on an existing drive? Without re-downloading the games? You have come to the right place.

Steam usually stores all of its games under C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\ but it also lets users move the games across drives. And this option is not limited to a single drive. For instance, you can move A game to X drive and B game to Y drive. Here’s how to do it.

Using the default method (Single game at a time)

Open Steam and go to Settings.

Go to the Downloads section, and click on the Steam Library Folders button.

Click on the “Add Library Folder” button. Navigate to the desired drive and create a new folder.

Go back to the games Library. Right click on the desired game(s) you want to move and click on Properties.

Go to Local Files section and click on the Move Install Folder button.

Steam creates a similar folder structure i.e. Steam\steamapps\common\ in the desired drive.

Doing it manually (Multiple games at a time)

There’s a limitation to the above procedure. It cannot let you move multiple games at once. Though, there’s is no direct way of moving multiple games at once in Steam. In this case, you can use the Backup & Restore function.

First of all, figure out where you want to move all the games. You should be having SUFFICIENT amount of space in the destination drive to carry out the transfer.

We are going to back up the games first and then restore them. So, we will need equal space for backups AS WELL.

After figuring out the desired location having sufficient amount of space, add that destination as an additional library by going to Settings > Downloads > Steam Library Folders and click “Add Library Folder”.

Exit Steam.

Copy the entire library / select game folders from the default location i.e. ‘C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common‘ and paste it to the newly created Library Folder.

Open Steam, and select the games in your list, and remove or uninstall it.

Now when you install games again, It will locate the game data, and since the games are there, it will not reinstall, but only download necessary files.

And, there you have it. This is how you can transfer your steam games to another location in your PC without re-downloading the complete thing.
