Jio to launch a new Android Go smartphone anytime soon

Mediatek just announced that its working on an entry-level powered by Android Go in partnership with Jio. After making data and voice services accessible to a larger chunk of the population, Mukesh Ambani-led Jio now wants to cater to the smartphone needs of the masses here in India.

T L Lee, head of mobiles at MediaTek, made this announcement during a press conference in Delhi. This partnership between RIL, Android & Mediatek is aimed to bring about access to smarter mobile phones at a cheaper price point than what current smartphones have.

Android Go which was initially announced at Google I/O 2017 aims to offer a full, robust mobile  experience to phones that don’t have capable hardware. The special edition of Android Nougat was specially cooked for devices which had 1GB or less RAM for the software to bank on.

What remains to be seen is if this new Jio smartphone will be carrier-locked or not!

The same event, back in December, also witnessed the announcement of Google Assistant making it to Jio’s smart-feature phone. Although the Jio Phone was smarter than the average feature phone it was far from giving heat to entry-level smartphones. Hence, this partnership might just look to resolve this gap and provide for a solid smartphone with capable software at a rock-bottom price.

With the advent of Jio’s telecommunication services in India, the telecom sector has been shaken up from top to bottom. The fact that Jio offers the cheapest 4G service in the world (let’s not talk about the speeds though) is a statement of proof in itself. This new Jio smartphone is expected to arrive in the first quarter of 2018. What remains to be seen is if this new Jio smartphone will be carrier-locked or not!
