This should be interesting: Razer acquires NextBit
Remember the unique looking cloud-first phone called Robin? The company behind it, Nextbit got acquired by the premium gaming laptop brand Razer.
Razer has taken over some other companies but it never really got close to the smartphone industry. Nextbit has been in the news only since a couple of years but they did carve an interesting name for itself. But Nextbit has not been having a merry time. Software support has been very slow. Price drops were regular. And hardware didn’t stand the test of time. But the software shined. Why I find this partnership particularly interesting is because both companies have a unique standing in their respective industries.
“[Razer are] rebels like us, they speak from the heart, and they share our need to push boundaries. Nextbit will operate as an independent division inside Razer, focused on unique mobile design and experiences. To put it simply, we’ll be doing exactly what we’ve been doing all along, only bigger and better.” -Tom Moss, CEO, NextBit
The first thing that comes to mind is obviously the next smartphone by Nextbit with help from Razer for a good balance between hardware, software and power. The Robin is due for an update since a long time. But if we think further, there could be a lot it other exciting things. Maybe the next laptop with unparalleled hardware and software that nobody else has to offer. Maybe you’re will be their entry into smart home kits. Or some online gaming systems. It can only get better now. Maybe some private gaming suite for Nextbit products.
We have a Robin with us at the office and we hope that this revives it. Though it’s worthy to b noted that the sales of the phone and accessories has been stopped, and warranties will be honored for another 6 months.
