Samsung Galaxy A9 launched with a quad camera setup
When do we stop?
Today is an important day for smartphones as the industry moves one step ahead. At an event in Malaysia, Samsung unveiled the new Galaxy A9 (2018) which is the World’s first phone with a 4 camera setup on the back. And no, before you dismiss this as a gimmick, read our thoughts to know why this phone excites us.
The Samsung Galaxy A9 (2018) sports a big 6.3-inch 2220×1080 SuperAMOLED panel, with no notch. The back is made out of a curved glass to help with the handling of this giant. The back, apart from the funky camera setup (more on that later), also houses the fingerprint scanner. On the inside, the phone is powered by an octa-core Snapdragon 660 chipset, with 6 or 8GB of RAM. You get 128GB of storage, which can be expanded by a MicroSD card. The battery is a big 3,800 mAh unit, which is very close to the Note9. If the history of the SD660 is any indication, this phone should be great in the battery department.
The phone will run on Android 9.1 out-of-the-box with Samsung Experience 9 skin on top. Bixby, Samsung’s smart assistant is also present onboard. Along with the headphone jack, the USB Type-C connector is on the bottom. The phone has support for Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, Samsung Pay, and 802.11a/b/g/n/ac (2.4/5GHz) WiFi support.
Alright, time to talk about the cameras! As we said, this phone has 4 cameras, each having a distinct purpose.
- The primary camera is a 24-Megapixel sensor with a big f1.7 aperture lens to help with detail and low light performance.
- Assisting in functions like Live Focus (portrait mode) and depth information, we have a 5-megapixel Depth sensor.
- For better performance during zooming, you have a 10-megapixel f2.4 lens, for a 2x Optical zoom capability
- Finally, to get more into the frame, you have an ultra-wide 120-degree f2.4 lens atop an 8-megapixel sensor
Why this phone is particularly exciting for us, is the fact that Samsung is known to experiment with new features on its A-series, and later bring them to its flagships, which means we can expect the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S10 to have a triple camera setup, at least in one of the variants!
The phone is available in 3 colors: Caviar black, lemonade blue and Bubblegum pink, and the pricing will be announced next month when it reaches more markets. We will update you once that is available.
EOTO’s take on the Samsung Galaxy A9 (2018)
I have been using the Samsung Galaxy A7 for the past few weeks and the phone is promising in the camera department. The other parts of the phone are not that exciting but the A9 addresses quite a few of those performance issues. And as mentioned earlier, that these phones are just stepping stones for the future of Samsung flagships, so you can expect a killer Galaxy S10 with extremely versatile cameras.
