Xiaomi’s Pocophone redefines bang-for-buck with the F1

And you thought Xiaomi couldn't get more aggressive with its pricing?

Pocophone F1 is a phone you’re not going to forget for a long time. A Snapdragon 845, 6GB of RAM, 4,000mAh of battery, all at a jaw-dropping starting price of INR 20,990. Yes, you read that right! Pocophone aims to be the budget flagship ‘that OnePlus couldn’t be’.

While Xiaomi has had a strong foothold in the Indian market (also surpassing Samsung & OnePlus in sales), it never could make a mark in the premium segment. The Xiaomi Mi 5 that was released three years ago was such a flop that Xiaomi decided to not release their next flagships and only focus on their budget offerings in India. With a new sub-brand i.e. POCO,  Xiaomi wants to dominate this coming-of-age segment of budget flagships in India.

Manu Jain who was responsible for the development of the OnePlus 6 competitor, said that the entire focus was on making a fast phone without the blings of a modern flagship (to bring the cost down). Hence, to give you an analogy from the automotive industry, it features the internals of a classy Jaguar in the overall externals of a Suzuki Swift probably. Yes, the F1 has a polycarbonate body that is reminiscent of the original Moto X. These polycarbonate bodies will be available in Blue, Black & Red colours. For ones who want a better looking body, can go for the Armoured Edition that has a Kevlar body with a price tag of INR 29,999.

To give the phone the speed it, it has a Snapdragon 845, Adreno 630 GPU and either 6 or 8GB of RAM. To make it better at handling heat during heavy usage or gaming sessions, it also has a copper heat pipe that the Note9 recently boasted of having – a phone that is priced at $1,000.

The Pocophone F1 has a 6.3-inch FullHD display with a wide notch and Gorilla Glass 3 (to cut costs). The wide notch, apart from housing the 20-megapixel front snapper, also houses an infrared sensor for a more accurate and reliable face unlock experience (even in dark conditions). The back of the phone houses the primary dual-camera setup that consists of a 12-megapixel sensor found on the Mi 8 along with a 5-megapixel sensor for additional depth info. There’s also a fingerprint scanner situated just below the camera which will unlock the phone within a second.

The F1 has a massive 4,000mAh battery that will definitely last a day on heavy usage and will be able fully replenish itself in about 2 hours via the USB Type-C Port. It runs on MIUI 9.6 over Android Oreo 8.1 but will soon get an update to MIUI 10. To make the phone experience more enjoyable and functional, Poco is also releasing its own launcher that has an app drawer and automatically categorises applications on the basis of its utility.

The F1 is the cheapest phone in the world to sport a Snapdragon 845, by quite a margin that too.

The Pocophone seems to be the OnePlus One of today’s world, except it’s way more cheaper (comparatively). The base model of the phone with configuration of 6GB/64GB costs INR 20,999 while the 6GB/128GB and the 8GB/256GB costs INR 23,999 and INR 28,999 respectively. The Armoured Edition with the Kevlar back and 8GB RAM & 256GB ROM will cost you a still pretty decent INR 29,999.

The phone will go on sale from 29th August on Mi Store & Flipkart exclusively. And if the pricing wasn’t low already, the three base models will enjoy an introductory discount of INR 1000 bringing the price of the phone down to INR 19,999, 22,999 and 27,999 respectively. HDF debit and credit card users can further avail a discount of INR 1,000.
