IFA 2016 pre-event spec

IFA 2016 is just a few days away, and companies have started sending out Invites about their respective launches.

Every September, tech firms from across the globe descend on Berlin, Germany, for the IFA consumer electronics show. This year is no different, so here’s what to look forward to at IFA 2016. While MWC covers the first half of coming months, IFA is known to be the mid year launch event, where other mid tier products are expected to launch.

This year, IFA is set to run from September 2 to September 7, although it’s guaranteed that some companies will hold press conferences and launch products in the few days leading up to the show, too.

We’ve compiled a list of products we expect to be launched at IFA this year, in order of Companies present.

1. Asus

Asus has already pencilled in its press conference for August 31, a few days before the show really begins. Asus unveiled a bevy of smartphones last year, plus a water-cooled laptop. However, given the recent launch of the ZenFone 3, a new standalone smartphone isn’t guaranteed – expect a spin-off instead.

Most of our attention will be on the already leaked ZenWatch 3, This year, the ZenWatch line could get a major refresh when the Taiwanese company holds its presentation at IFA 2016. For one thing, its next-iteration smartwatch called ZenWatch 3 could come with a round body based on the numerous rumors and leaks floating around.

According to the FCC filings, the third-generation ZenWatch will sport a body made of stainless steel and will have support for Bluetooth 4.2 and Wi-Fi 802.11n. There is no word yet on how much onboard memory and RAM the device will be sporting, but if Asus is doing a drastic change on the body of the device, then it’s likely that the internals will also be improved.

2. Fitbit

It’s rumoured that Fitbit has two new products to show off this September. According to specialist site Wareable, these devices are codenamed Laryon and Fermion. There’s a chance that these trackers are actually the Fitbit Flex 2 and Fitbit Charge 2, although nothing’s confirmed yet.

3. Huawei

At IFA 2015, Huawei announced its Mate S handset, and offered up some new details about the Huawei Watch. Unfortunately, with the recent launch of the Huawei P9, it’s obvious there’s no high end coming soon.

Due to Huawei’s prolific nature, we wouldn’t rule out a new smartphone, tablet or smartwatch. The most likely launch candidates include the Huawei Mate 9 and the Huawei Mate S2.

4. LG

Last year, LG had unveiled the Urbane smartwatch. This year too, we are expecting something similar on that front.

LG is rumored to be debuting its G Flex 3 at the Berlin event. There are also reports suggesting that the V20 shall be unveiled instead of the Flex 3, but nothing can be confirmed as of now.

he V20 made a remarkable appearance in leaked renders of its white variant. According to GSMArena, the renders show the 5.7-inch Quad HD display of the V20 and the always-on secondary display atop the former, as well as the circular fingerprint scanner and the protruding dual-lens camera system at the back of the handset. The V20 is also rumored to come with a Snapdragon 820 processor, 4GB RAM and Android’s upcoming OS update 7.0 Nougat, making it the perfect device to redeem LG from failure that is the G5.

The launch of the G Flex 3 at IFA 2016 has long been rumored online. Phone Arena even stated back in May that the handset will be sporting a 5.5-inch Quad HD display, a Snapdragon 820 chipset, 4GB of RAM, a 16-megapixel back camera and an 8-megapixel front-facing one when it is presented at IFA 2016.

In addition, the LG G Flex 3 will likely arrive with a more advanced self-healing technology than that of the G Flex 2, which launched back in January 2015. The curved smartphone is also rumored to be modular just like the G5, according to a previous Pocket-lint report.

5. Moto

Motorola has just launched a bunch of new smartphones under the Moto Z and Moto G brands, so it’s unlikely we’ll see any new handsets. The firm’s other popular area is wearables and we’re hoping to see a new Moto 360, ideally with the ‘flat-tyre’ effect of the screen gone.

Lenovo has put out a teaser video of its IFA lineup for the Berlin technology show, which starts on August 31. The teaser hints at a new range of Lenovo Yoga laptops ahead of the holidays, possibly a new Moto 360 smartwatch as well as new Moto Mods for its semi-modular Moto Z smartphone.

Lenovo’s video also shows the bendable/flexible display, which was first unveiled at the company’s annual Tech World conference in San Francisco. The display is however still a prototype and thus a work in progress, so its unlikely any new product with this will be unveiled.

6. Nubia

Nubia is ZTE’s subsidiary and the company has already launched a few devices in 2016.

If you take a look at the invitations down below you will notice that “What’s NU? @ IFA 2016” is written, which can only indicate that a new phone or family of phones will be introduced at the mentioned event. Moreover, the “Dream Without Boundaries” caption is also include, which most likely suggests that the smartphone that will be revealed will be sporting thin bezels, just like the Nubia Z11, which was released not long ago.

The Nubia Z11 is currently the manufacturer’s flagship phone, which features a near bezel-less 2.5D screen that measures 5.5 inches. Also, the handset is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon SoC, just like most of the premium devices launched this year. This is not the first bezel-less phone released by Nubia because the idea has been on the company’s mind for a while now, and they introduced several phones having this specific design.

7. Samsung

Samsung has opted to forgo IFA this year for its main second-half-of-2016 launch: the Galaxy Note 7. That was already showcased at a dedicated Galaxy Unpacked event on August 2, alongside a brand new USB-C Gear VR.

However, Samsung is a firm built on abundance, so we’re guaranteed to see at least something at IFA 2016 from the South Korean tech giant. A possible appearance from the Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 looks likely, but the most promising prospective product launch could be the Samsung Gear S3. Samsung has heavily teased the existence of the Gear S3 smartwatch, and plans to show off the new device at a gear event on August 31 at Berlin’s Tempodrom – proceedings kick off at 18:00 CET.

8. Sony

Two handsets have been rumoured so far, tipped under the model numbers F8331 and F8332. We’ve already seen some leaks regarding an ‘Xperia XR’ handset, including renders of what could be a new, top-end smartphone.

9. Xiaomi

Xiaomi is already teasing its Xiaomi Mi Note 2 smartphone, so we’re fairly confident that it’ll make an appearance at IFA 2016. But there’s no telling what else the fast-growing Chinese smartphone giant has up its sleeve for Berlin this year.
