Samsung surprises Galaxy users with smoother update system for next phones

Samsung is changing how it handles software updates on future Galaxy devices. Starting with the Galaxy S25 series, the company will introduce what’s called seamless A/B updates — a system that installs Android updates in the background while the user continues using the phone as usual.

This update method, already standard on Google Pixel phones, uses two system partitions. One stays active while the other quietly receives the update in the background. Once the process is complete, the device reboots into the updated version, cutting down on waiting time and reducing the chance of errors during installation.

Up until now, Galaxy phones — including the recent S24 — required users to pause everything while the phone applied a system update. That meant waiting through reboots and update screens, often at inconvenient times. The new method aims to make the process feel almost invisible.

Samsung hasn’t officially detailed how this change will roll out beyond the Galaxy S25, but the shift aligns with what more Android manufacturers are doing to improve reliability and reduce update-related complaints.

The Galaxy S25 series is expected to launch in early 2025. Alongside its hardware upgrades, this behind-the-scenes improvement could be one of the most practical changes for everyday users.
