Google may be testing a separate social networking app called YouTube Tamba, according to code discovered in a recent Android version of YouTube. The reported references include user profiles, followers, private messages, group conversations and posts, suggesting a product that would sit beyond YouTube’s conventional video-focused experience.
The finding was reported on 4 November 2026 after Android Authority examined YouTube version 21.44.534. Google has not announced Tamba, and the code does not establish whether the application will be released publicly, when it might appear or which markets could receive it. There is also no confirmed availability information for India.
What the leaked app structure suggests
References to Tamba appear to be linked to a separate package named com.google.android.youtube.sandbox. According to Android Authority, YouTube checks for this package and changes its behaviour when it is present. The test build reportedly has its own search suggestions and file-provider components, features commonly associated with a standalone application rather than a simple hidden screen inside YouTube.
Client identifiers for both Android and iOS were also reportedly found. That could indicate that Google is considering support for Apple’s platform as well, although the identifiers alone cannot confirm a release on iPhone. The project’s internal references reportedly use the name “Project Sandbox”, while the interface assets are marked as experimental.
“Project Sandbox”
Android Authority reportedly identified 38 new icons with a hand-drawn visual style. The set includes symbols for the home screen, search, content creation, camera, inbox, chat, stickers and a microphone. A logo described in the report combines the Tamba name with a scribble and a play-button shape.
Messaging and posts could sit alongside Shorts
The reported code mainly points to notification and communication functions. People could potentially follow one another, approve follow requests and exchange messages, photographs and videos in individual or group conversations. Follow requests would be consistent with private accounts, a feature that is not a central part of YouTube’s current public-facing experience.
Other references reportedly mention reactions to posts, Shorts and comments. The code also appears to include replies containing either a voice recording or a Short. Shorts may be playable within conversations and accessible from a lower navigation bar, based on the reported interface strings. These details could position Tamba closer to a social platform than to a conventional companion feature for watching videos.
- Followers and follow requests: the reported strings suggest account-to-account connections and approval controls.
- Private and group communication: users may be able to share text, images and videos in one-to-one or group conversations.
- Audio and Shorts replies: voice notes and Shorts could reportedly be used as responses within chats.
No confirmed launch or Indian rollout
The package and interface elements appear to represent an internal experiment, not a finished consumer product. The reported code cannot confirm Tamba’s final design, features, branding or business model. It also does not show whether the service would be integrated with existing YouTube accounts, offered as a separate sign-up or restricted to a limited test group.
For users in India, the practical impact is therefore limited for now: there is no announced app to download and no confirmed launch plan for the country. If Google eventually releases Tamba, its combination of video, messaging and social discovery could give YouTube a broader role in users’ online communication. At present, however, Google’s lack of confirmation means the project should be treated as an unverified experiment rather than an upcoming product.
