JioHotstar has introduced StreamToCart Ads, an interactive advertising format that connects its streaming interface with Instamart. The feature allows viewers to browse products shown through an advertisement and add items to a cart without leaving the video player or opening a separate app.
The format uses a native overlay within the viewing interface. When an eligible advertisement appears, viewers can interact with it, view available products and build an Instamart cart while the programme continues to play. This places shopping activity inside the streaming experience rather than sending users to another application or website.
How the format works
JioHotstar’s approach links an advertising impression with a direct commerce action. According to JioHotstar, advertisers can measure the path from a person seeing an ad to that user adding a product to a cart. The company said this gives brands an additional way to assess consumer response beyond conventional indicators such as completion rates and click-through rates.
| Feature | What JioHotstar says it enables |
|---|---|
| Shopping interface | Browsing products through an in-stream overlay |
| Cart action | Adding products to an Instamart cart |
| Playback | Video continues during the shopping interaction |
| Measurement | Tracking activity from ad impression to add-to-cart |
The company is positioning StreamToCart Ads for categories including fast-moving consumer goods, packaged food, beauty products and consumer electronics. These categories cover both routine purchases and products that may be discovered while a viewer is watching content. The feature therefore connects the reach of a streaming platform with the quick-commerce ordering process operated through Instamart.
“With StreamToCart Ads, we are transforming the ad break into an opportunity for viewers to discover and purchase products seamlessly within their viewing experience.”
— Bhaskar Ramesh, Head – Entertainment Sales, Digital at JioStar
Bhaskar Ramesh said JioHotstar was developing advertising at the intersection of content, technology and commerce. He added that the format was intended to bring brand storytelling and measurable business outcomes together on a single screen.
Why the launch matters in India
The launch comes as quick-commerce services become a regular channel for online shopping in India. JioHotstar cited a Datum Intelligence study which found that half of online shoppers place at least five orders a month through quick-commerce platforms. The purchases covered routine grocery replenishment as well as spontaneous buying, categories that are relevant to the products targeted by the new advertising format.
JioHotstar also shared figures from its own internal data. The company said 83% of its viewers identify as active shopping enthusiasts, while 60% of platform-driven conversions come from new or dormant shoppers. These figures were presented by the company as part of the case for connecting video advertising with commerce, rather than as an independent measurement of the wider streaming market.
For viewers, the principal change is that product discovery and cart creation can take place without interrupting playback. For advertisers, the format offers a measurable action between exposure and a possible purchase. The announcement does not provide details about the products, advertisers or user eligibility involved in the initial deployment, but it establishes in-stream shopping as a new part of JioHotstar’s advertising service in India.
